Your first meeting with a client – Do it right!

The importance of good client-accountant communications cannot be overemphasized. How else will you really know what your clients expect of you? Keep your clients informed about business, tax, and financial matters, as well as how your firm operates. Client education is a must. It affects the client’s expectation of what you can do for him or her. If your firm doesn’t address your client’s wants (doesn’t meet the client’s expectations), some competitive firm will.
Here are some brief suggestions on meeting a client for the first time.

  • Every new client should be interviewed, and the initial conference should be free of charge. At this conference, discuss your fee structure with the client.
  • Make him or her feel comfortable about keeping in touch with you. If you intend to charge for phone calls, be sure to let the client know.
  • Discuss your method of billing and of collecting fees. If you intend to charge interest on overdue accounts, this is the time to let the client know.
  • Encourage your clients to ask questions concerning all engagements and the fees involved. Educate him or her as much as possible about the services you can provide.
